I LOVE being a thrower. I LOVE working out. I
LOVE lifting weights.
I was born in
Santa Clara, California in 1988. I've lived everywhere from Modesto,
California to Woodstock, Georgia - thanks for moving us around so much,
Pops! - but I consider the Ahwatukee Foothills of Phoenix, Arizona my
home, as I lived there the longest. I have four younger siblings:
Katelyn, Paul, Lauren and Ryan. Things got a little crazy at times
around our house, but I’m thankful to have grown up in such a big family
- never a dull moment, and always a friend around!
I graduated from
Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Arizona in 2006. There I was a
four-year letter winner in the shot put and discus. To this day, I still
hold the school records in the shot put and discus. I also hold the
Arizona state young women’s record in the hammer.
I first became
acquainted with throwing in the spring of 2002, when my 8th
grade P.E. teacher, Kim Ungvarsky introduced me to the shot put and
discus. I’ve been hooked ever since, but it wasn’t until my junior year
of high school when my coach, Shawn Hanrahan put a hammer in my hand
that I really got serious about throwing. I won two state championships
in the discus, and one in the shot put. I was also the Great Southwest
Hammer Champion in 2005, and in 2006 I was a USATF All-American.
After high school
graduation, I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas
for a year and threw on the track & field team. I decided that it
wasn’t for me and transferred to Colorado State University in Fort
Collins, Colorado - GO RAMS! There, I earned all - conference honors in
the hammer in 2008 and 2009. I placed 8th at the NCAA Midwest Regional
in 2008. Currently, I'm ranked 7th and 9th in the hammer and discus,
respectively.
I graduated from
CSU with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Technical Communications.
Go ahead; let me hear those gasps of fear about how newspapers are going
down—I’m ready for the “New Journalism”, so bring it on baby!
